چکیده
Dear Editor, Early detection of malignancies is not easy. Few methods of health screening have been proven to be of value. The use of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in health screening has never been proven to result in early detection of cancers1 but requests to test tumour markers continue to be made. A raised CEA is not an uncommon fi nding and there are no established protocols on how to approach this issue. We report 5 cases where a raised CEA was the initial fi nding that later led to the diagnosis of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC).

Imaging of medullary thyroid carcinoma with Tc-99m (V) DMSA [Persian]
Twenty-one patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma were studied prospectively with Tc-99m (V) DMSA after surgery. Pentavalent DMSA scintigram demonstrated abnormal uptake in 13 and equivocal uptake in 6 patients. Finally, seven patients with surgical or other imaging documentation were selected for this paper. Most of these patients were asymptomatic. Six patients had hypercalcitonemia ...

OBJECTIVE To describe a rare case of occult (<1 cm in diameter) medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) in a 45-year-old woman, presenting as an asymptomatic mediastinal mass. DESIGN The diagnostic methodology included laboratory measurements of relevant biochemical and hormonal parameters including calcitonin (CT), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and chromogranin A, and imaging techniques including...
متن کاملCarcinoembryonic antigen in thyroid disease.
Plasma carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels were measured by the Z-Gel technique in 138 patients with benign thyroidopathies, 25 patients with thyroid cancer, and 141 normal persons. Levels were raised (above 5 ng/ml) in 2% of the normal subjects, in none of the patients with benign thyroidopathies, and in 20% of the patients with thyroid cancer. They were considerably raised in all cases of m...
